Automatic Programmes vs Manual Mode in Massage Chairs

Knowledge

You’ve already picked out your perfect massage chair. The delivery team has just set it up in your chosen spot, and you’re excited for your first massage session. All that’s left is to sit down, turn it on, and… then what? Automatic programmes are tempting with their simplicity – just one click and relaxation begins. On the other hand, manual mode gives you full control – you decide which parts of your body need the most attention and what technique to use. So, what should you choose? Which option is better? Let’s take a closer look at both massage chair modes and see when it’s best to go with an automatic programme and when manual mode might be the better fit.

Let’s start with a video where Paweł gives you a clearer idea of the programmes and massage techniques available in a massage chair.

Automatic Massage Programmes in Massage Chairs

Every massage chair comes with specially designed automatic programmes that make it easy to use. Just one press of a button starts a relaxing massage without the need for any additional settings. So, what exactly are automatic programmes? Automatic programmes are pre-set massage cycles of a specific length, combining different functions of the chair in various intensities and sequences. They automatically adjust the massage technique, and the pressure of the airbags, and add extra features like foot roller massage.

There are two types of automatic programmes. The first is based on the massage area – it can be full-body or target-specific regions. The second type is designed around the desired outcome, such as relaxing, stretching, recovery, or calming effects.

How many automatic programmes can a massage chair have?

Depending on the model, a massage chair can have anywhere from one to several dozen automatic programmes. This mostly depends on how advanced the massage chair is, the manufacturer, and its intended use. Generally, the more high-end the model, the more automatic programmes it will offer. In our current lineup, the Bodyfriend Quantum leads the pack with 49 automatic programmes. These include options for different discomforts, independent leg massager movements, unique brain stimulation modes, and even programmes to enhance emotional balance.

Why use automatic programmes?

The biggest advantages of automatic programmes are their convenience and ease of use. Just pick a programme from the remote and start it with a single click. No need to know massage techniques or tweak any settings. Feeling tired? Choose a relaxation or recovery programme. Back pain? Go with a back-focused option. Need to unwind? Anti-stress programmes are perfect. Want to warm up before a workout or speed up muscle recovery? Stretching programmes are spot on. Once you’ve explored your massage chair’s programme list, you’ll know exactly what to pick.

Manual Mode in Massage Chairs

Are automatic programmes not quite enough for you? Not meeting your needs? Or maybe you just want more control over your massage session? Then check out manual mode.

How does manual mode work in massage chairs?

In manual mode, you’re in full control. You choose the massage technique, the target area, and any additional features you want. You also decide the massage chair’s position and the length of the massage. Essentially, you can customise everything to your preferences.

Is manual mode the same as the massage technique?

Not quite, although it’s a common misconception. Choosing a massage technique is just one part of the manual mode. The full experience involves several other settings as mentioned above.

Why use manual mode?

Manual mode guarantees a massage tailored exactly to your needs. You can choose a single technique and focus the massage on specific areas that need extra attention. This is especially useful if you’re dealing with muscle tension in places like your shoulders or lower back. Another benefit of manual mode is the endless possibilities it offers. You can experiment with dozens or even hundreds of different configurations, making sure the massage experience never gets boring.

As you can see, both automatic programmes and manual mode have their benefits. Automatic programmes are perfect for beginners and quick sessions. Manual mode, on the other hand, requires a bit more knowledge and practice, but the results are sure to satisfy even the most demanding massage chair users.

What kind of techniques does the chair use for a back massage?

They are similar to those made by a human hand. Let me explain.

I have explained how a massage chair works and that there are specific mechanisms in the back-rest which are guided to work on your back. It has massage arms which simulate the movements of human hands providing massage techniques such as: kneading, tapping, knocking and rolling along your spine. There is also the shiatsu technique, which I will talk about later. These are just a few of the core techniques and every massage chair should have them.

Can I adjust this massage technique to my individual needs?

Yes, each massage chair should allow you to choose a range of working massage techniques. The three main ones, are as follows:
The whole back – during the massage, the mechanism will move from the bottom to the top of your spine.
Partial massage – when you want to work on a specific part of your back. For example, you can set it to lumbar and it will just focus on this area.
Point massage – For this, the mechanisms do not move up and down, but the massage movements relieve tension accurately in one place.

What about other adjustments?

At this point it is important to explain that you can adjust the width of the massaging hands, allowing them to work close to the line of the spine or further apart. Speed can also be regulated to imitate faster and slower movement and this is often mistaken for strength. This adjustment is only available in models which have a 3D mechanism. The pressure is regulated by the massaging hand moving closer to the body, or hiding deeper in the back-rest.

Is it possible to regulate the strength of a back massage in models without 3D?

There is no specific control to do this, but you can change the position of the massage chair.

The flatter you lie on the chair, gravity pushes your body closer to the mechanism and therefore the massage will be stronger. In a sitting position, the massage will feel softer and is best for beginners, as it allows muscles to become accustomed to the pressure.

So with the single massage technique, you can choose any setting you like. However, with the auto-programme, settings are already done for you.

Does each massage chair have an auto-programme?

Yes, every massage chair has some automatic programmes. There are several predefined programmes available, you do not need to choose a technique, speed or duration it is already done for you. Depending on the programme chosen, a massage can take between 7, 15 or even 30 minutes. You just press the button and the massage chair will take control.

How would I know which auto-programme to choose?

One way is to choose which part of the body you want massaged: the whole, upper or lower body. Another way is to choose what you want to achieve.
For example if you simply want to chill-out press the Relax button; if you need a quick session to refresh yourself during the day use the Quick Restore programme; If you choose the Stretch programme you can relieve stiff muscles.

These are just a few examples of many programmes, whichever one you choose you will feel less tense and more relaxed.
