Will every massage chair suit both someone who is 160 cm tall and someone close to 2 metres? Not always. A user’s height and weight affect the massage range, leg positioning, and overall comfort, so when choosing a model, it is worth checking whether its construction and adjustment range suit you.
However, the numbers in the specifications do not tell the whole story. Two people of the same height may have different leg or torso lengths, broader shoulders or larger feet, which means the same chair can provide a very different level of comfort for each of them. We see this regularly during test visits in our showrooms. That is why we explain which parameters are worth paying attention to and when it is best to test a chair before buying.
Massage chair for a tall or short person – what matters?
A user’s height primarily affects which areas of the body are covered by the massage performed by the massage arms and whether the legs can be positioned comfortably in the leg and foot massage section. In most modern models, a body scan is performed before the massage begins. This allows the chair to detect the position of the shoulders and set the operating range of the massage arms accordingly. Their position can also be adjusted manually, making it easier to adapt the massage range to the way your body is positioned and avoid situations where the massage arms work too high or too low.
Body scanning does not, however, change the physical capabilities of the chair. The massage arms move along a guide rail of a specific shape and length, so when choosing a massage chair for a tall person, it is worth checking whether the massage reaches the neck and upper back area. In the case of a massage chair for a shorter person, it is important to make sure that the massage is not performed too high in relation to the shoulders and neck.
Leg positioning is equally important. The adjustment range of the footrest should allow the legs to be supported freely and positioned comfortably. For taller users, it is worth checking whether the calves are positioned within the correct massage area and whether the feet fit inside the foot massager without excessive pressure.
From our observations, the massage range across the back is not always the main limitation for taller users. The design of the leg and foot massage section and its adjustment range can be just as important.
How much weight can a massage chair support?
The maximum user weight for a massage chair depends on the specific model and its construction. Before buying, it is therefore worth checking the recommended maximum load specified by the manufacturer, especially if your weight is close to that value.
The weight limit alone does not indicate how much space the chair provides. Someone who falls within the permitted weight range may still need a wider model because of their body build. When choosing a chair, it is therefore worth considering not only the maximum load, but also the seat width and the way the body is positioned in the chair.
Why are height and weight alone not always enough?
Height and weight alone do not fully determine how the body will fit into a particular chair. Body proportions also matter, including leg and torso length, shoulder and hip width, as well as foot size. This is why the maximum user height for a massage chair should be treated as an important reference point rather than the only selection criterion.
For users with a larger build, seat width and the space between the side sections of the chair are particularly important. Differences in leg or torso length also affect body positioning, footrest adjustment and the massage range of the massage arms. The specifications can therefore help narrow down the choice, but only testing a particular model will show whether the chair actually provides the right level of comfort.

The data in the table can help narrow down your choice, but if your height or weight is close to the limit specified for a particular model, or if precise adjustment to your body proportions is especially important to you, it is worth testing the chair in person.
When is it particularly worth testing a massage chair before buying?
A test visit is especially useful for very tall or very short users, people with a larger body build and those whose weight is close to the maximum load specified for a particular model. It is also worth testing a chair if it will be used by several household members who differ significantly in height or body proportions.
During the presentation, check whether the massage covers the correct area after the body scan, whether the seat provides enough space and whether your legs are comfortably supported. In models with calf and foot massage, also check how your calves and feet are positioned. If the chair has forearm and hand massagers, make sure you can place your arms in them comfortably.
A well-fitted chair should not require you to shift around in the seat or adopt an unnatural position just to make sure the massage is felt in the right area.
Not sure which massage chair will be right for you? Book a test visit at a Rest Lords showroom and compare several models in practice. The specifications will help you narrow down your options, while testing will show which chair provides the right body position and the level of comfort you expect during massage.

Paul, is height a factor you should consider, when you choose a massage chair?
Most people can fit into most massage chairs, but sometimes it’s not that simple, so I need to explain it a little more.
The majority of massage chairs are suitable for people who are between 1 meter 55 and 1 meter 95 tall. In some of the smaller, compact models the massage mechanisms may not reach the neck level, if the user is over 1 meter 80. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t use them, but it’s a good idea to note that with a larger chair the range of the massage will increase, and it can be more comfortable for taller people.
What should taller people take into consideration?
If you are a tall person, it is not just about the size of the massage chair or the scanning system, some models also offer an automatic or manual extension for the foot rest. This allows people to straighten their legs and be more comfortable.
From experience, it’s also a good idea for very tall users to check the size of their feet, particularly if they are choosing a chair with an enclosed foot rest with a front airbag, where the maximum comfortable size is about 48. I think that this is about a 14 in UK sizes, which is big enough for almost everyone.
Is it ok to use one of the larger massage chairs if you’re not very tall?
We need to remember that massage chairs use a scanning system which recognises the height of a user and will adjust the mechanism accordingly. If you are 1 meter 60 tall, the largest massage chair can still work for you.
What about the weight of a person, does that matter?
Usually, massage chairs are tested in the factories, standard size models have a (maximum suggested) weight of 140 kg and compact models 120 kg. If users don’t exceed these weights, then the massage chair should work properly for years.
Although bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and as I said at the beginning, massage chairs are suitable for most people. However, if you have any doubts about measurements, yours or the chairs then it is best to sit in one before you buy it.
